On Saturday, May 18th Piopio Dental held its third annual Charitable Symposium. 27 delegates attended from all over the North Island. Delegates came from Auckland to the Hawkes Bay, New Plymouth to Palmerston North and all over the greater Waikato.
Continuing education is compulsory for dentists to remain registered in New Zealand. This ensures that your dentist keeps up to date with current teachings, research, and improved techniques, ultimately providing a better service to you, the patient. Often these courses are very expensive and usually only held in the main city centres. The concept of the Piopio Dental Charitable Symposium is to provide affordable education to dentists in a relaxed environment.
Any profits made from the day are then given back to the local Piopio Community. As a working Mum, owner and dentist, Kim Tatham often struggles to find the time to help at the local Primary School fundraising events. So, each year Piopio Primary has received money for different activities or resources. Piopio Community Pool is also an annual recipient to help ensure this facility remains open for all the community. Our local volunteer Firemen have also received sponsorship for their Sky Tower challenge which raises money for cancer.
All the speakers kindly present for free as they love the concept of giving back to communities. This year’s speakers were Dr. Mo Al-Dujali, Orthodontist, Dr. Abdul Aziz, Endodontist, Dr. Brian Whitley, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and Steve Shepard, Henry Schein Shalfoon. Payment is by good old-fashioned rural hospitality and letting the city boys help with pest control on the farm. Realistically the goats and deer are damn safe, these guys are much better dental specialists than hunters.
The location for this day has been the Night Owl Bar and Eatery. Each year there have been more delegates attend and it looks like the conference could outgrow the venue. But the message from delegates is clear, they love the rustic location and the food, so Piopio Dental has been instructed to work out how to remain at the Night Owl!
A fantastic day was had by all this Saturday. So it looks like the Piopio Dental Charitable Symposium will be back next year and continue to support the awesome Piopio Community.
